I’m finally back in the US working on some films in New Orleans and processing photos from my recent travels through southern China. Many of them are already on flickr. There’s also a photo-travelogue which catalogs a broader and more personal view of my time walking through China…and a few surreal moments along the way.
No travels would be complete without a few car pictures! While in Hong Kong I spent an afternoon with this lovely nero 599:

Just like that, China’s a wrap. I have to take the time out to thank my great friend Dan Ramirez without whom traveling through China would have been virtually impossible. For months we wandered through the thickest parts of rural China with barely a clue as to the language or the people. It was an arduous and tiring path — one that forced us to push ourselves hard and rely on each other constantly. At the same time we both learned fantastic and valuable lessons.

From the end of the road looking back…thanks pal. I could not have done it without you. Here’s to the next one

COMING UP: more movies in New Orleans, new portrait material featuring New Orleans-based musicians, and some exciting collaborative automotive photography!

In two weeks time I’ll be setting off for a backpacking journey through Nepal and China. I’ve been planning this trip for a long while now for a handful of reasons including landscape and social photography in some interesting (and very beautiful) places. Me and my friend Dan will be hitting the road for a couple of months with plans to be back in the US by May 15th. At first we had very specific plans and places to be, but have backed off the idea and will spend the time at a more relaxed pace. The places I’m most excited to pass through include Nepal’s Annapurna sanctuary and the farmlands of Yunnan province in China.

Since this whole trip is happening out of a backpack I won’t be in contact much while I’m gone and I’ve had to cut back on photo gear substantially to make room for other supplies. I’m going to shoot on two cameras, my trusty Canon 5D2 as well as a Panasonic GF-1 (micro 4/3 camera) and a couple of prime lenses for each. One point of interest is a prototype lens from NOKTOR, something they call the “f/0.95 HyperPrime” which produces a very unique look. It’s been getting press recently from Wired and DPReview, and I’m pleased to say I’ll be taking it with me to record a lot of the trip. Otherwise there will be little beyond camping supplies in an effort to save weight. To protect all this stuff and keep it dry I’m using the largest (and sweetest) backpack I’ve ever had…all fused materials, incredibly well balanced, and completely waterproof. The bag is made by Arc’teryx, who make exceptional gear and have an amazing service department!

So that’s it. I’m not sure what the internet situation will be like in Nepal and rural China, but I’ll be back in the US by mid-May in time to shoot some more car photography and post updates on the trip!

Happy (belated) New Year! 2010 is a big one, starting with two big photo projects that I’ve been planning for some time now. The film I’ve been working on wraps up next month, just in time for Palm Beach Supercar Weekend 2010! I’m very happy to announce I’ll be providing official coverage of all the Supercar Experience events this year. Check out their website for more info about their events in Palm Beach, New Orleans, and New York. More info will be available on my facebook page as the events get closer.

Another big project I’ve had in the works for a while is a two month backpacking trip through Indochina, with stops in India, Nepal, Tibet and China. I’ll be leaving early March and returning mid-May with new landscape and portrait photography from some of the most incredible parts of the world. My great friend Dan Ramirez will be joining me for the journey. He’s been planning a lot of our trip and found many beautiful places for us to explore when we get there.

On my return to the US in May there’ll be a lot more car photography, a summer of travel through the US, more publication deals, and even some speaking arrangements…more on that when I’m back!

In the past couple of months I’ve been at work on a number of cool projects…so here are some updates! For starters, a long term personal project (mixed media portraits) is finally starting to bear some fruit. I’ve been shooting these for about two months when I’m not busy with other work. All of the subjects are artists who live in or participate in projects in the New Orleans area. Here’s a sample, via flickr:

The process involves a specific lighting setup plus illustration/incorporation of the geometry in post. All in all I aim to have at least 20 of these made…and hopefully be done before the end of the year

I’ve also been at work on some automotive and architectural photography in Texas. Assisting me was Justin Cesler, also an automotive photographer and editor. Justin and I are planning some big things for next year — keep an eye out!

Amazing how quickly summer becomes fall. Predictably, no one mentioned this to the weather in New Orleans — with highs in the 90’s and rain all day. Particularly hard to deal with coming from a couple of amazing weeks in northern California, enjoying San Francisco and Lake Tahoe as well as the much-talked-about Burning Man arts festival in Nevada. The latter was an amazing experience, almost beyond words. Despite the fact that Black Rock City is a very dusty place I decided to take cameras with me. I’ve seen some horror photos. After they were sufficiently covered in a ball of ziplock bag and duct tape I made some trips across the playa with my buddy Wren and shot some photos. Here’s a brief tour (the rest are here) :

Happy to report zero dust made it to the cameras This was a great adventure to end a summer of travel. In the past few months I’ve made it through New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado, Wyoming, Alaska, Washington, California, and Nevada. Saw tons of friends and family, made additions to my landscape photo portfolio, and hiked through the most beautiful parts of the Western US. Settling back into life in New Orleans, the next adventure is already on the table: in a little less than 6 months I’ll be leaving the US and traveling through Asia with my great friend Dan Ramirez. I’ll be detailing a lot more on that expedition over the next couple of months. In the mean time regular work continues, and automotive photo is picking back up. I’m headed out of town next month to shoot some incredible cars. Fellow automotive photographer Justin Cesler will be joining me in Houston to assist on the awesome multi car shoot. I’m looking forward to working with many cars I’ve never shot before, and some I’ve never even seen! In other car photo news, a recent look through my archives turned up some great photos I’d never published online. I started processing them and decided to have a little more fun with it; they got a lot more post processing than I normally dole out. The set was featured on Behance Network a couple of weeks ago. Here are my favorites:

I hiked through the Chugach along the Russian River and caught a glacier landing flight at Denali basecamp. And (of course) I took some photos. Here are a few of my favorites from the trip.

I also shot a series of aerial photographs which are featured on my Behance portfolio. Although I only ventured through a small portion of Alaska I was treated to many beautiful bird’s eye views of the landscape…many of its intriguing patterns were very striking to me. Full set here.

Currently circulating the PhotographyServed homepage…here’s a direct link. A few samples (via flickr):
